How was Montezuma a bad leader?
Montezuma II was a horrible leader who treated his civilians with no respect, ultimately leading to his downfall. He attempted to bribe, murder, and systematically torture a god and his companions into submission. He also left behind a bad influence for his people, which led them to capture a Spanish caravan and murder all of them slowly over a constant sacrifice of six months. They would rip out their hearts, yes, still beating, and force their compatriots to watch. They would also feed them hallucinogens to force them to calm down. Imagine the tension as the last 5 or so men were waiting to be slaughtered as the smell of blood wafted in the air. Ugh. It'd smell like mushrooms and plasma.
How was Montezuma a good leader?
Why is Montezuma to blame?
First of all, he was an avid supporter of the human sacrifice, which might make people a little antsy. Second, He was a dastardly devious demonic despot who put fear in the hearts of his people. There are some myths he used voodoo to control and torture people. And it appears that a curse falls on anyone that goes to Montezuma castle, and it hosted the film " The Evil". Spooky. Third, he was trying to kill Cortes before he did anything wrong, so he was most likely a paranoid acting on his impulses, which were not great.
